German-born artist Mevlana Lipp takes inspiration from the natural world that has surrounded him from a young age growing up in a small German village. From the study of flora, fauna and biology, Lipp creates biomorphic pieces at the confluence of sculpture and painting. The artist cuts the floral forms out of wood and merges them into relief-like pictures. The bright colour of the motifs enhances the artificial effect and emphasises their entanglement.
'Unfolding' sees the artist explore the intersection of sculpture and printmaking by executing the work in the classical technique of etching used by Old Masters such as Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt in a contemporary context. Lipp carefully etched the work's outlines on the surface of a metallic plate which is then used to imprint ink on the paper. This technique allows Lipp to experiment with the sculptural properties of printmaking in very much the same way his painting practice straddles the line between painting and sculpture.
