Minyoung Choi
Korean artist Minyoung Choi’s works straddle the boundary between surrealism and figuration, the real and the unreal, often functioning as a series of meditations on a particular theme or concept. Her dreamy representations of anthropomorphic animals evoke subtle human feelings which quietly contrast with the contemplative mood of their environment. Her works exude a sense of poetry, acting as metaphors for our relationship to nature and the world around us. The cartoonish features of the animals invite a fantastic element in her compositions by drawing on the nostalgic memories of the talking creatures she encountered in the fairy tales of her childhood.
Minyoung Choi (b. Seoul, Korea, 1989) lives and works in London, UK. She received her MFA in Painting from the Graduate School of Seoul National University, Korea (2013) and from the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London, UK (2017). Her work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, notably at Lychee One Gallery, London (2021) and included in multiple group shows, including at the Hive Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China (2021); Saatchi Gallery (2020) and Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK (2020).
